The public limited company Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn is strictly a management company in which BVZ Holding AG has a 50% share. As part of the contractual relationship, it assumes a management role for BVZ Holding AG, BVZ Asset Management AG, Matterhorn Gotthard Verkehrs AG, Gornergrat Bahn AG and Matterhorn Gotthard Infra-struktur AG.
BVZ Holding AG holds a 75% share in Matterhorn Gotthard Verkehrs AG, which is responsible for the operation of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. In contrast to the private-owned subsidiaries, this concessionary transport company can claim public compensation for the public transport services it provides in the cantons of Valais, Uri and Graubünden.
Matterhorn Gotthard Infrastruktur AG, which is wholly owned by the federal government and the cantons of Uri, Graubünden and Valais, is responsible for the railway track and overhead catenary system, oper-ating control centres, railway station buildings required for operations, and the workshops for the technical maintenance of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. It finances itself through compensation and investment loans from the public sector.
